IA create indigenous soul music. Their compositions blend old with new and feature the voices found with traditional Māori instruments/Taonga pūoro.

Māori music collective IA mix taonga pūoro with electronic music to create a unique, catchy sound. They recently performed at our ‘Ka rewa a Matariki’ show, have recorded recently in the ngāhere and have even filmed a live music video on a waka at sea. The Waikato based band is dedicated to showcasing taonga puoro and Te Reo Māori in their music.

IA aims to make taonga pūoro the “meat and potatoes” of their music. Their ambitious music video for their latest single ‘Kōkōrangi’ celebrates the art of traditional pacific voyaging. The word kōkōrangi translates to astronomer and the lyrics of the song talk about how pacific ancestors and current voyagers of today have sailed across vast oceans using the star systems and natural elements to guide them.

Lead vocalist and taonga pūoro player Reti Hedley and band member Moetu Smith introduce IA and give you the lowdown on their newest single ‘Kōkōrangi’.
