Pōrutu are essentially long kōauau with usually three (but up to six) holes of the same relative spacing as kōauau but located near the bottom end. Generally Pōrutu are made from three different types of wood- porokaiwhiria (pigeonwood), mataī and tutu. The song of the pōrutu was esteemed as being able to ‘speak mouth words’.
